Home Remedies to Get Relief from Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis is caused by Vata and Kapha imbalance (Production of Ama being a major factor) and when these vitiated Doshas enter into the Prashman stage Amavata is caused. Basically, to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis there are several home remedies that have been known for ages as their benefits have been known to every home to those people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. These remedies slow down or prevent progression, reduce symptoms, and flare-ups caused by rheumatoid arthritis. Being an auto-immune chronic disease it requires an Ayurvedic treatment for sure but remedies have their own benefits and role for early and healthy recovery. 

Home Remedies for Rheumatoid Arthritis are: 

AJWAIN

Ajwain the most used Ingredient in every kitchen has wonderful results to treat rheumatoid arthritis and abdominal disorders as it is an anti-oxidant. To treat Rheumatoid arthritis, we need Ama Pachan to be done of the body that can be done with Ajwain. It can be taken in form of powder or can be taken directly with water. Also one needs to keep in mind to follow a gap between the meals to reduce the formation of Ama. It also helps to manage digestive problems by promoting digestive fire due to its deepan property. It purifies blood, reduces gastric issues, reduces pain and swelling in RA.

METHOD:

    • 1-2 glasses of water, add 1tsp. Ajwain seed, boil it for 8-10 minutes on low flame. Take 2-3 tsp. of decoction 3-4 times a day. Ajwain powder helps to digest Ama.
    • Dip painful joints in Ajwain water for a few minutes that helps reduce swelling and pain on the affected joint. 

GINGER

Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties, including the ability to suppress inflammatory molecules from the body. Deepniye, also an anti-inflammatory as it inhibits prostaglandin synthesis. There are several medicines that are prepared from the stem of the garlic plant. Ginger helps in reducing inflammation when taken continuously for at least four weeks. One can consume Ginger in anyways but it is mandatory to add to your diet. Garlic can be used for local application as well as can be consumed empty stomach.

METHOD:

    • Take 10 gm. of dry ginger powder (Sonth) well mixed with Erand (castor) oil should be consumed internally for relief from painful joints for at least 40 days.
    • Ginger tea -2inch of fresh ginger, crush it roughly with pestle and mortar. In 2 cups of water and add crushed ginger and bring it to a boil. Boil for 10-20 minutes, strain it and add honey. Drink ginger tea 2-3 times a day. 

GARLIC

Garlic where add extra taste to a dish it is loaded with several health benefits too. It is beneficial for our health as it contains Sulphur and Allicin so it helps ease pain from rheumatoid arthritis. Garlic has anti-arthritic activity i.e. it prevents cartilage destruction and reduces inflammation in arthritis. Garlic is Vata Anulomak, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory so it protects cells from free radical damage and also protects from autoimmune effects. It also helps to balance estrogen levels in females. 

METHOD:

    • Make a paste of garlic and mustard oil this can be used for oil application as this helps to relieve pain in joints. 
    • Consume Garlic daily empty stomach (2-3 pieces with lukewarm water).
    • Don’t forget to add in your pulses and Vegetables. 

TURMERIC

Turmeric the golden spice is used to color and flavor the foods is overloaded with healthy benefits. It is used in Ayurvedic medicines to treat several chronic diseases including arthritis and musculoskeletal disorders. Besides possessing anti-inflammatory healing properties, turmeric and curcumin (the active ingredient which gives turmeric its yellow color) also have analgesic effects. It has the ability to reduce and even stop the swelling from further expansion. It also reduces the chances of degenerative conditions in the body and is very beneficial in boosting Immunity. 

METHOD:

    • Take 1/4 tsp. of turmeric powder, add 1/2 tsp. of amla and Nagarmotha. Boil it in 20-40 ml of water for 5-6 minutes. Cool it to room temperature. Add 2tsp. of honey and drink 2tsp. of mixture twice a day after any meals.
    • Turmeric milk as advised by an Ayurvedic expert. 

CASTOR OIL

Bhedniye so helps to pacify Vata also helps to relieve pain. Castor oil helps to treat joint pain. It helps to reduce swelling caused due to rheumatoid arthritis by massaging and drinking oil. It also improves nerve functioning. It helps to cure constipation because it is a powerful laxative. The pain-reducing and anti-inflammatory qualities of castor oil are helpful to those suffering from an inflammatory disease such as rheumatoid arthritis. 

METHOD:

    • Take 1 to 2 tsp. of castor oil into warm milk before sleeping.
    • Oil massaging after hot fermentation can be beneficial in rheumatoid arthritis. 
    • In severe pain boil a glass of water and mix a pinch of ginger powder. Cool this water and add 2 tsp. of castor oil and mix well and drink. This provides instant relief from pain. 
    • Drink castor oil 2 tsp. with warm water at bedtime, it will help in Virechan, which reduces Ama and toxins from the body. 

CINNAMON

Cinnamon is known as a delicious spice but many are unaware of its powerful antioxidant properties that help inhibit cell damage from free radicals. It helps to balance Vata and Pitta. There are some patients who also have vitiated pitta, so this can be used for those patients and can be best used for patients who complain about dryness of mouth and thirst in rheumatoid arthritis. Cinnamon is beneficial in cardiovascular disease in women also with rheumatoid arthritis. A pregnant lady should always consult before adding this to her diet. 

METHOD:

    • Honey with cinnamon can be used due to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.
    • It can also be added to tea, smoothies, oatmeal, or milk as advised.

LAVAN/BALUKA POTLI SVEDA

Sweda is said to be an unparalleled treatment in the systemic manifestation of Amavata. Generally when there is a pain in the knee or any joint local basti is given but in the case of rheumatoid arthritis, Ama is deposited in the body and joints so giving a Snigdh Basti i.e with oil can lead to more painful conditions to relieve that Rukshsved is given with Lavan or Baluka.

METHOD:

    • Take a potli made of cloth.
    • Heat some sand in a pan and pour that hot sand into the potli.
    • With the potli give heat to the affected joint for at least 20 minutes.
    • Repeat this as guided by your expert.

FENUGREEK SEEDS

Fenugreek is popular and known for ages for healing pain in joints due to its anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. It gives wonderful results for people suffering from arthritis. It helps to treat arthritis pain and also reduces swelling. It is rich in saturated fat that is why it is said the pain reliever is beneficial in arthritis. It is rich in calcium and iron which strengthen the joints. It contains Vitamin C which helps to reduce swelling and provide strength to muscles and bones. It is beneficial in loss of appetite patients too. 

METHOD:

    • Eat a spoonful of fenugreek seeds with warm water on an empty stomach early in the morning
    • Soak 2 tsp. of fenugreek seeds in a glass of water at night. In the morning drain the water separately from the seeds and drink this water and chew the seeds. 
    • Take 3-5 gm. of powder with water about 1/2 hour before meals. In rheumatoid arthritis, 1/4-1/2 tsp. of fenugreek churna with honey can be taken after meals twice daily. 

FENNEL SEEDS

To control or prevent arthritis fennel seeds are one of the best solutions. Fennel seeds have numerous positive aspects on our body. It also balances pitta. It helps in relaxing muscles in the intestine and relieves constipation, gas, and acid reflux. It has anti-bacterial properties, inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria, reduces inflammation. It contains vitamin E which helps in cramps. It is rich in calcium and phosphate which is beneficial for bones and also activates the enzymes and improves metabolism. 

METHOD- 

    • It can be consumed directly or in powder form or in tea form.
    • Boil a cup of water and add1 tsp. of fennel seeds and boil it. Later mix jaggery in it and consume it.
    • Fennel powder can be taken with warm water after meals.
    • 200mg of fennel seed powder should be taken twice daily with water after meals. 

BLACK PEPPER

Black pepper is well-known as King of Spices as it is valued for its flavor in food. It is also good for health as it is an antibacterial antioxidant and has inflammatory and gastro-protective effects. The active compound of black pepper i.e. piperine works wonders in treating pain and swelling caused by rheumatoid arthritis. 

METHOD-

    • Its consumption of vegetables, soups, pulses is mandatory as it aids digestion. 
    • It is also beneficial in cold and cough and can be consumed by adding in tea. 

Despite these, you can also follow these remedies for early safe, and healthy recovery.

    • Take Ashwagandha powder 2 gm. with honey twice a day. 
    • Boil half-half spoon of each ingredient i.e. Methi Dana, Ajwain, Dalchini in 2 glasses of water. Boil until it is left half and drink it empty stomach daily. 
    • Cow’s ghee- 1-2 tsp. of ghee on empty stomach for reducing dryness in the body. Take it once a day for 3 months. Pain in joints is mainly due to Vata imbalance. Massage with ghee with light force helps to reduce joint pain. 
    • Peedantak Kwath is very easily available in the market. Boil 3 tsp. of Peedantak Kwath in 3 glasses of water, boil it until it reduces to 1 glass. Later consume the Kwath as half glass in the morning and a half in the evening after 30 minutes of a meal.
