What really is the Chikungunya virus?

Viruses lie on the borderline of living & non-living. When in contact with the living host it can reproduce.

The viruses have their own machinery and this virus is a single-stranded RNA virus that causes acute illness to the affected person and is transmitted through a mosquito belonging to the Aedes species.

How is this transmitted to Humans?

As mentioned above, it is transmitted through mosquitoes. Let’s begin with the mechanism.

If a person somehow has the virus in the circulating system and the uninfected mosquito feeds on the same person, it will pick up the virus while ingesting the blood. This virus will replicate inside the mosquito.

Now, when this mosquito will feed on a human, it will transfer the virus inside the person and this virus will amplify itself affecting the person. This is how the cycle goes on.

The virus is known as CHIKV and the species of mosquito that are involved in the transmission are Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus.

After the transmission, a person starts to experience various symptoms which are covered in the next part of the section.

What are the symptoms that a person experience after getting infected with this virus?

Now that the person is infected, he/she will have this broad range of symptoms. The symptoms appear usually after 3-7 days after an infected mosquito has bitten you. The following listed are the signs that you may have Chikungunya.

    14. Swollen lymph glands (lymphadenopathy).

What is Chikungunya Arthritis?

Following this viral infection, a person may develop chronic Chikungunya arthritis that resembles Rheumatoid arthritis

So, this type of arthritis is post-viral as mentioned in the starting. In this type after or during the recovery phase from the CHIKV, the affected individual starts to experience the symptoms of arthritis that mostly turns chronic.

The signs of arthritis include pain, swelling, inflammation, tenderness, and stiffness of the joints. Along with this, the affected area becomes red and the range of mobility also decreases.

With just the Chikungunya the patient feels better within two weeks, but the joint pain can go long and may persist for several months.

What does Ayurveda say about Chikungunya Arthritis?

Sandhijwara means fever of joints and is similar to Chikungunya arthritis. Ayurveda uses a simple approach to treat this disease. The modifications in diet and lifestyle, along with the consumption of Ayurvedic herbs are the base of Ayurveda.

These practices help in easy recovery of the diagnosed by giving no side effects. It also enables the body to develop a strong immunity, which decreases the chances of being affected by this virus again.

Is there any other mode by which Chikungunya Arthritis can be treated?

There are no vaccinations available to deal with this. The only way is to prevent it and manage it by natural means. Protecting yourself from mosquito bites is the only way and if there was not enough protection from the your side, then the best way is Ayurveda.

How can the transmission be prevented?

    1. The water must not be stagnant near your surroundings. Make sure the environment does not have any natural and water-filled containers or habitats that become the breeding environment for mosquitoes.
    2. The insecticides must be sprayed to kill the breeding mosquitoes. The health authorities should take the initiative of controlling the population of mosquitoes.
    3. One should also minimize skin exposure and wear clothes that cover the skin region of the body.
    4. The mosquito repellants can be applied to the clothes or the skin as they will keep the mosquitoes away.
    5. Mosquito nets can also be used while sleeping. These nets provide great protection to the people.
